Who We Are

Sea-Change Partners is an international team of experienced professionals who provide strategic assistance, advice, executive coaching, and practical skills training in areas of strategic concern to businesses, governments, and international organizations. Our areas of expertise are Negotiation & Influence, Conflict Management, Crisis Leadership & Crisis Management, and Communication & Relationship Management.

Collectively, we call these areas “Critical Capacities.”

Our Story

Sea-Change Partners was founded in 2000 (the Year of the Golden Dragon) in Singapore by faculty at Harvard University and the National University of Singapore.

What we all had in common, other than our university connections, was a passion for putting good ideas into practice in a wide variety of settings, from business, to government, to communities, to international organizations. And we match that with teaching others in a wide variety of settings the lessons learned through that practice. That service-driven nexus is at the heart of nearly everything we do.

And we are proud of our heritage, as Sea-Change was the first firm in Singapore specializing in Negotiation, a field which has grown significantly throughout the region – and the world – in the ensuing decades.

Our Name

People often ask us about the name, Sea-Change Partners.” There are a few reasons we chose it. One reason is simply that we are located in – and often focus on – Southeast Asia (SEA). Another reason has to do with our approach to our work. Rather than simply applying what are commonly seen as “best practices,” we have often found that conventional wisdom is worth questioning. We apply critical thinking, and we often see that better approaches, though less common, are possible. This principle is embedded in our pedagogy. And it often means a “sea-change” in thinking. And, finally, our Founder and Managing Director, Keith Fitzgerald, worked in Ireland and Northern Ireland in the late 1980s and early 1990s and got to know the great Irish poet, Seamus Heaney, and is a fan of his beloved poem, The Cure at Troy. The long poem, taken from myths of the Trojan War is, in part, about suffering and healing. And it includes the following stanzas:

 

“Human beings suffer. They torture one another They get hurt and they get hard. No poem or play or song Can fully right a wrong Inflicted and endured.

History says, Don’t hope On this side of the grave, But then, once in a lifetime The longed-for tidal wave Of justice can rise up And hope and history rhyme.

So hope for a great sea-change On the far side of revenge. Believe that a farther shore Is reachable from here. Believe in miracles And cures and healing wells.”

Our Logo

The logo is mean to be a literal symbol of the name, “sea-change,” with the waves symbolizing the sea and the triangle symbolizing delta, the mathematical symbol for change.
